Austin Texas' swirling and lustrous psych-punk unravellers, Rayon Beach were captured recently at their hometown's best live venue, Beerland for a mind-warping live experience as evidenced by these incredibly fried photos. With their debut 12" EP on HoZac already well into its second pressing and heads turning in their direction from all over the place, it seemed only natural for these seething soldiers of sonic slime to take on their wanderlust and embark on their first official tour this summer. Tearing off the heads of anyone ballsy enough to witness their in-person degradation of aural atrocity, ...

So X (Australia) and A-Frames did a partial U.S. tour recently, and I was lucky enough to catch two of the shows. The first was at the Hemlock in San Francisco with Hank IV, who I only caught the end of, and didn't get any shots. Sorry too, 'cuz Bob has gotta be one of the most photogenic front men out there. I hadn't seen the A-Frames in years and had no idea what to expect. I remember when I got their first record I put it on my mini disc player and it was probably ...

Chicago’s nascent punk/post-punk music scene has always taken a backseat in the popular music press. While CBGB’s logos now adorn the chests of yuppies, and most retirees can at least name check the The Sex Pistols or The Clash, if you say Chicago, the response from even audiophiles is typically “uh, Cheap Trick?” [Note: apologies to Rockford residents!] Chicago’s Naked Raygun or Big Black might get a nod, if you’re lucky. Well, the times are a changing, and the first modern vindication/re-assessment of a vibrant late 70’s/early 80’s Chicago musical landscape for me was a fantastic ...

The Don Bolles Interview

Having met Don Bolles a handful of times, I’ve always been equally impressed by his ability to spin a yarn, as well as his rock ‘n’ roll resume. As a member of The Germs, Vox Pop, deathrock originators 45 Grave, as well as the glam-pop combo known as Celebrity Skin, Don’s experiences have turned him into a generator. He’s always bursting at the seams, emitting sincere enthusiasm (and humor) when relating his own oral history, as well as that of the L.A. scene. Don’s never left the radar, and his latest project,

EXHUMED: The Endtables

posted Tuesday Apr 20th, 2010

As far as Midwest first wave punk bands go, not many people immediately recognize Louisville, KY's The Endtables as one of the genre's finest, but after the reality sets in with this Drag City reissue LP/CD hitting the shelves this month, their incredibly visceral punk savagery will undoubtedly be turning heads. If you've never had the pleasure of hearing their signature song, "Circumcision" on the Bloodstains compilation series, it's an inhuman punk masterpiece that bridges the gap between garbage and gold like few other specimens of the 70s era can. The original 7" EP now rarely ever surfaces, ...

Tonight in Portland, Oregon at the East End, come check out a fine array of local head-blasters and Columbus' own Psychedelic Horseshit as they cap off a night destined to drip with space junk juice and other indescribable delights. Kicking off the night are Portland's newest aural amphibians Burning Yellows, and the guests of honor in celebration of their debut 7" release this month on HoZac Records. They exude the perfect haunted jangle and simplistic pop parable to set the leering tone for the night's darker creatures to venture out into view. With a mesmerizing vibration ...
