The turban-donning R&B legend, The Mighty Hannibal will perform this Friday at The Earl in Atlanta with fellow Atlanta natives, The Black Lips as a back-up band. James T. Shaw, who later adopted the moniker “Hannibal” in the late-50s, has certainly seen the underside of life. A former pimp, heroin addict and convict, Hannibal's music has stood the test of time and out-lived his excesses. Performing over the past fifty years, Hannibal has seen his share of minor successes with hits like 'Baby, Please Change Your Mind,' and 'Fishing Pole' among others, and was even responsible for launching a teen dance craze with his 1966 hit 'Jerkin' the Dog.' In the 70s, Hannibal adopted the name King Hannibal and his output reflected more gospel influences, his voice fit perfectly with more socially conscious songs. Since the release of Hannibalism on Norton records in 2001, he has found a new audience and has been playing live since. His soulful and honeyed singing style should be an interesting fit with the scum-flower sound of the Black Lips, who've officially crowned themselves as The Mighty Hannibal Fanclub, Atlanta Chapter. The Reigning Sound and Gentleman Jesse And His Men open making this an unmissable show.
